How do I know if my house has termite damage?

Termites are known as the worst nightmare for any homeowner! They are as small as ants but can cause severe property damage that compromise the strength and safety of the infested structure.

It’s not easy to detect infestation of termites and most of the time, it requires a professional eye. When a regular person finds out they have an infestation of termites, it’s probably because the damage has already been done… A pest control specialist can help you remove them and we can certainly fix the damage!

The worst part about termites is that they do all their dirty work out of sight, that’s why it’s so hard to spot the warning signs. They eat the structure of your home including support beams, wall studs, timber posts, floor joists, etc. They usually go for timber but they can also feed on other materials including plaster.

Even if you think the termite damage you have found is insignificant, you must take immediate action to prevent the colony from growing and causing further damage to your home.

Tips for recognizing you have termites:

  1. Look for termite affected timber in and around your home. You will notice timber with small holes and tunnels through it which is very weak when you apply pressure with a key or even your hands. The surface of the timber can often look unaffected but when pressed it will collapse.
  2. Look for termite droppings which can look like piles of dust or a light mud. This is a combination of saliva, timber and termite faeces!
  3. You may hear the termites making clicking sounds. The soldier termites bang their heads against timber and shake their body if they feel threatened and you can hear these sounds.
  4. Doors which have become tight or hard to open/close. Whilst the termites are eating timber they create moisture which can cause timber to warp.
  5. Tap on your walls and you may hear hollow sounding timber inside the walls. Termites eat in random patterns and you may notice some areas of your timber frame sound hollow whilst others do not
